Written by Samantha Maloney | Mar 6, 2024 9:06:00 AM

As the school year draws to its fourth quarter, many of our students and parents are gearing up for a significant transition– the leap from 8th grade to high school. This transition marks a pivotal moment in a student’s academic journey, one that requires not only academic preparedness but also a foundation of independence and life skills. At BES, we understand the challenges many students face during this transition period. With College Planning and Executive Functioning coaching, we are here to provide comprehensive support every step of the way.

Transitioning from 8th grade to high school and high school is more than just a change in scenery; it’s an opportunity for students to cultivate independence across various aspects of their lives. Here are some key areas where independence plays a crucial role– building College Readiness

College Readiness

College readiness is a multifaceted concept that extends beyond academic proficiency. It encompasses a student’s ability to adapt to all aspects of college life and take ownership of their educational journey. At BES, we believe in empowering students to develop the skills and mindset necessary for success in higher education. To gauge your child’s level of college readiness, ask yourself the following four questions:

1.) Can my child wake up on time?

The ability to wake up on time without parental assistance is a hallmark of independence. Establishing this habit early on not only ensures that your child will be on time to class  but also instills a sense of responsibility in teenagers who are on the verge of young adulthood. Our coaches work with students to develop effective morning routines that set the tone for a productive day ahead.

2.) Can my child prepare small meals?

Basic meal prep skills are essential for students to sustain themselves (Yes, even with a college meal plan!)  and make healthy choices. From preparing simple breakfasts to assembling nutritious study break snacks, learning to make small meals empowers students to take control of their nutrition and dietary habits. Our EF coaches provide guidance and resources to help students develop a  healthy meal prep routine.

3.) Can my child manage their own money?

Responsible budgeting is a vital life skill that prepares students for the financial responsibilities of adulthood. Whether it’s budgeting for school supplies or leisure-time hobbies, understanding how to manage money effectively is crucial for teenagers. Helping younger clients manage their first bank account is a skil which coaches are able to build. In fact, BES’s Executive Functioning coaches teach practical guidance on budgeting, saving, and making informed financial decisions.

4.) Can my child do their own laundry?

Laundry may seem like a mundane task that most young adults pick up once their parents no longer step in to toss a load of clothes into the machine; however, the routine of doing one’s laundry usually takes time for teenagers to adapt. Nonetheless, it’s an essential part of independent living. Knowing how to sort, wash, and fold laundry ensures that students can maintain cleanliness and organization in their living spaces. Creating and following a weekly laundry routine is an important skill that can be cultivated.
